O Hai Portland

askdrding | Unabashed Geekery/Nerdishness | Sunday, 04 October 2009

Still in the city of endless hipstery, great coffee, and lots of rain. Trying out blogging from the iPhone, and let me just say that so far it’s an enormous pain in the ass. When is Apple going to release a palmtop for chrissakes?

All bitchery aside, it’s been a swell film fest (and Cthulhucon) and Portland still has great beer. And, apparently, Live Nude Girls on every other street corner.

Just kidding. Dr. Ding loves Pornland bunches.

Somebody Buy Me This

Oh my gentle GirlJesus™. I found this gem over at List of The Day. I want!

What’s not to love? Purple-haired aliens, mesh manboob shirts, and supergroovy space vehicles. I immediately put it at the top of my Netflix queue. If this is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

And while I’m on the subject of cinéma vérité, when are you bitchez going to pony up and buy me Killer Drag Queens on Dope like I demanded asked so nicely? Chop chop.

The Call Of Nerdthulhu

This is where Dr. Ding is this weekend, loyal readers. The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhucon in rainy, porny, cigarettey Portland, OR — the literal and spiritual home of every art history major that ever lived to ascend the cutthroat ranks of record-store assistant managership.

Portland? Is fucking bleak, dude. It’s like an entire generation or three smoked, like, waay too much ditchweed laced with PCP and now everyone is on a total, permanent bummer. I know this to be true because Portlandites wear faded hoodies and dark, sarcastic clothing and slump around in the rain with no umbrella.

The festival itself is more entertaining, which is part of why we try to attend every year. It is very, very nerdy up in the historic Hollywood Theater, and the air is redolent with the smell of unwashed gamers, patchouli’d-up hippies, and whatever it is that Goth folk use to make their hair stand up so purty.

The Beyoncé and I are ridin’ at least two hundred deep amidst the weirdos and malcontents. In fact, I would daresay that we could safely number ourselves amongst the “squares” and “The Establishment” here, man.

That is all.

The Watchmen Trailer. That Is All.

Nerd Girls Are Fucking Awesome

Dr. Ding sez: if’n you want to read a thought-provoking article on girl geeks and the potential corporatizing of our identities by the so-called “culture” at large, then you really need to check this post by @slackmistress out.

Also: although it’s against company policy* to apologize on this blog, I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for splitting my infinitives and putting verbs in weird places. Eight years of studying German will do that to a gal, and I only just now realized I’ve been doing it. Sorry.

Resuming normal snarky/smug operations.

*Dr. Ding takes deeply personal offense at bloggers who continually apologize for everything from not posting often enough to their lack of font savvy. Sac/k up, people. Every once in awhile, say, if you’ve suddenly developed a severe drinking problem and have posted a spate of pictures of your ass in all its assy glory on your needlework blog, it’s perfeckly fine to apologize. But (HAH! Didn’t see that one coming, did you?)… it’s recommended that you just ignore your normal human shortcomings and failings in Blogoramaville. At some point, someone is sure to point them out to you, and who are you to take that simple, singular joy away from them? No one, that’s who.

Pardon My Narcissistic Ballyhooing

Dr. Ding is still whoring herself gleefully out over at UGO.com. For real; my editor thinks I’m a lucite-heeled poledancer down at the Sons of Hermann Biweekly Krackenkokainenfest who just so happens to have read Freud in the original German. I am so sneaky and wicked bad like that. But they pay me*, so it’s totally cool.

My latest clinical masterpiece is entitled “How to Make Love to a Geek” and can be found here. Enjoy. Go on, you deserve it.

*I know, right?
